<p> </p>
<p><strong>1 Context</strong></p>
<p>Established in 2001 in a picturesque setting in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, Pacific Lutheran College is a leading K-12 learning community that is innovative, dynamic and progressive. Firmly underpinned by the values and traditions of excellence of Lutheran Education in Australia, students have achieved outstanding success in the academic, sporting and cultural dimensions of their lives. Enrichment programs in all three areas have enabled students to explore their potential.</p>
<p>Pacific has established a strong academic culture, which promotes thinking, deep understandings and creativity based on the learnings of Harvard’s Project Zero team. The synergy of these learnings with the research of positive psychology and Lutheran theology provides for a rich whole of life learning culture.</p>
<p>Unique experiences provided through the College’s excellent outdoor education, pastoral care and personal development programs, and the opportunities provided through academic, sporting and cultural learning, support an enriching whole of life education. Active involvement in local and international community service projects broaden young people’s world view and sense of efficacy.</p>
<p>Our staff take advantage of flexibility in physical and virtual spaces to support an increasingly personalised approach to learning for our young people. Pacific has a seamless curriculum across Kindergarten to Year 12 with teams of teachers working across the four subgroups of the College. Staff are expected to learn collaboratively to contribute to a whole school approach as they lead learning in the Foundation College (Kindergarten – Year 2), Junior College (Years 3-5), Middle College (Years 6-9) and Senior College (Years 10-12).</p>
<p>There has been a strong partnership of mutual mission and service between Pacific Lutheran College and the St Marks congregation.</p>

<p><strong>2 Role Description</strong></p>
<p>This exciting role has a primary focus of growing opportunities for students to engage deeply in the spiritual life of the College, and the strengthening of youth ministry outside of school hours including connections to the local Lutheran congregation. The conditions of the role will be negotiated to reflect the strengths of the successful applicant.</p>
<p>The College Chaplain will work closely with the College Pastor to expand the ministry and service opportunities available to students across the College. The College Chaplain will relate to students to form significant mentoring relationships with the expectation of developing and nurturing of students’ faith and growing the capacity of students to act as mentors. </p>
<p>This intentional development of spiritual formation and culture within the school includes working with the College Pastor to lead and support the worship life of the College, involvement with student leaders through the Pacific Action Groups and engaging students in the service opportunities through projects and College partnerships. The College Chaplain and Pastor also support the wellbeing of students by working together with the Pastoral Care team in implementing strategies (with other relevant college staff) to care for their emotional and spiritual health.</p>
<p>The College Chaplain has a strong visible presence within the College and supports the local Lutheran congregation. This includes working closely with the Congregational Pastor to establish effective links for staff, students, parents, congregational members and the broader local community.</p>
<p><strong>The successful applicant must:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Demonstrate a personal commitment to the College Vision, Mission and Values underpinning the delivery of a Christian based education to students in the College community, demonstrating Christian integrity in all things.</li>
<li>Demonstrate a strong commitment to the ethos and theology of Lutheran schools.</li>
<li>Be a practising Christian (of Lutheran faith or background highly desirable) with the ability to relate the Gospel message to their role within the College, connect the Word to young people’s worlds and encourage a spirit of Christian care amongst students and staff.</li>
<li>Be passionate about working with and supporting young people on their educational journey.</li>
<li>Display professionalism, enthusiasm and creativity in engaging the school community.</li>
<li>Display discretion, confidentiality, honesty and integrity in his/her relationships.</li>
<li>Demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team, empowering others, and initiating, adapting to, and leading change.</li>
<li>Demonstrate efficiency, initiative, outstanding personal organisation, reliability and meet the College’s Staff Code of Conduct.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Strengthening Lutheran Identity </strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Seek to promote at all times the Lutheran aims of the College and to enhance its Lutheran identity.</li>
<li>In conjunction with the College Pastor, lead regular worship activities for students, staff and the College community.</li>
<li>Assist staff and students in the preparation and presentation of worship activities and daily devotions including the provision of resources.</li>
<li>Promote faithfully the spiritual welfare and faith formation of everyone in the school community.</li>
<li>Support and be a resource person for the teachers of Christian Studies, and, as appropriate by negotiation, participate in the teaching of Christian Studies.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Enhancing Excellence in Teaching and Learning</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Knowledge of how Lutheran theology provides the foundation for and informs educational theory and practice in the Lutheran school context.</li>
<li>Skill and confidence in supporting the formation and learning of adults and students coming from a range of backgrounds, in their connection to the Lutheran identity and ability to respect alternative traditions and perspectives </li>
<li>Ability to work and plan collaboratively with colleagues and support the learning of Christian Studies in the College.</li>
<li>Engage in Ongoing Improvement and Innovation</li>
<li>Commit to ongoing theological and professional learning.</li>
<li>Promote and enact the College’s values and mission.</li>
<li>Assist in the regular evaluation of the ministry and mission of the College, including their own role in that ministry and mission and contribute to the development of a Mission and Ministry Development Plan.</li>
<li>Awareness of social trends and issues that impact the spiritual lives of adults and students.</li>
<li>Capacity to reflect on practice and adopt changes that lead to ongoing improvement.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Community Building</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Nurture strong and effective relationships with staff, students and families of the College including the Early Learning Centre. This would include the leadership of small groups, including the College’s youth group.</li>
<li>Work with the Pastor and the Pastoral Care team (including the College Counsellor) to provide spiritual, social and emotional support for members of the College community and be sensitive to the need to refer individuals to appropriate professional help as required.</li>
<li>Network with Chaplains and Pastors across the Sunshine Coast and Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand.</li>
<li>Display consistent and effective communication skills and develop positive and collaborative relationships with staff.</li>
<li>Help foster an active prayer life within the College community.</li>
<li>Serve as an example of Christian conduct by earnestly endeavouring to live in Christian harmony with all members of the community.</li>
<li>Encourage Christians in the College community to fulfill their responsibility to witness for Christ and be involved in the mission activity in their College and in the congregations in their local communities while being sensitive to and respecting the faith of those who may profess a different faith.</li>
<li>Cooperate with and support pastors and congregations in the area served by the College and help College families to connect with local worshipping communities, with a particular focus on the St Marks Lutheran Congregation, Caloundra.</li>
<li>Support the College’s service to others in local, national and international contexts.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Leading Effective Organisation and Management</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Fulfill the normal administrative responsibilities of the position.</li>
<li>Assist in the development of a vision for ministry relevant to the local context.</li>
<li>Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a team member of a learning community.</li>
<li>Support the ministry team in the local context.</li>

<p>Carry out to the best of their abilities the specific duties assigned to them by the Principal or College Council.</p>

<p><strong>3 Workplace Health and Safety</strong></p>
<p>Effective implementation of the School’s Workplace Health and Safety Manual requires the active involvement of all employees. All employees have an obligation to comply with statutory and organisational requirements, procedures and rules that are intended to protect the health and safety of persons at the workplace including the general public. All Academic and Ancillary staff must:</p>
<ul>
<li>Perform work safely in accordance with the training (induction and annual) they have received and report substandard work conditions or practices.</li>
<li>Follow lawful written and verbal workplace health and safety instructions issued by managers and supervisors and observe all warning signs and notices.</li>
<li>Report all personal injuries immediately to the supervisor and appropriate School delegate.</li>
<li>Co-operate with and participate in all activities to make the work environment safer and healthier.</li>
<li>Maintain good housekeeping standards at all times.</li>
<li>Observe all warning signs and notices.</li>
<li>Ask for specific instruction regarding the hazards associated with performing tasks which may not be completely familiar.</li>
<li>Wear clothing and footwear appropriate to their job and use all personal protective devices specified and/or routinely expected for that job.</li>
<li>Operate specified plant and equipment, e.g. motor vehicles, etc, only if properly trained and authorised to do so.</li>
<li>Not wilfully or recklessly interfere with anything that might harm the health and safety of themselves and others.</li>
<li>Not attend work under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs. Employees taking any medication must follow the directions of use and report to their Supervisor, if this substance may interfere with their performance at work.</li>
<li>Assist with Risk Assessments and Accident Investigation Reports when requested to do so. </li>
<li>Undertake first aid training where identified in the College First Aid Policy and Procedure (if applicable).</li>

<p><strong>4 Selection Criteria</strong></p>
<p>The successful applicant will need to demonstrate or have the demonstrated capacity to develop the capabilities described below:</p>
<p><strong>SC1. </strong>A deep knowledge of and heart for the principles and practices of the Christian ethos of the College.</p>
<p><strong>SC2. </strong>High levels of interpersonal skills in relating to youth and working collaboratively with youth, ministry leaders and adults to provide pastoral support and connection for youth and enhance youth engagement with explorations of faith and service-learning opportunities. </p>
<p><strong>SC3. </strong>Formal qualifications and experience in youth ministry. Mature leadership skills that enable the person to fulfil roles of leadership within the different contexts of the roles.</p>
<p><strong>SC4. </strong>An open and creative approach to the nurturing of faith communities that takes into account the needs, capacities and interests of young people and their families.</p>
<p><strong>SC5. </strong>High levels of organisational skills, flexibility, confidentiality, creativity, teamwork, innovation and perseverance required to contribute to the nurturing of wellbeing and faith in a highly effective dynamic K-12 learning community.</p>

<p><strong>6 Conditions </strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Have a blue card and/or is a teacher registered with the Queensland College of Teachers. </li>
<li>Complete compulsory induction courses, necessary for the workplace generally and specifically a workplace of the Lutheran Church.</li>
<li>Days and hours of work to be negotiated depending on the nature of the role and weekend commitments. Salary and conditions will be negotiated depending on the qualifications and role of the successful applicant in line with the current Queensland Lutheran Schools Enterprise Agreement. Where the Chaplain role involves formal teaching this will be a negotiated load between 0.2 and 0.3. The contract is for a four year period. </li>
