Cranbrook School is seeking a highly experienced and passionate senior secondary school Debating Coach to commence as soon as possible.

<p><strong>ABOUT THE POSITION</strong></p> <p>Debating coaches are responsible for developing students’ speaking skills, analytical ability and general knowledge. You will&nbsp;develop resources appropriate to the ages coached, give clear and timely feedback, and undertake minor administrative tasks as directed by the Debating Coordinator.</p> <p>Debating coaches support and promote the Cranbrook Debating programme’s vision, which aims to encourage students to:</p> <ul> <li>Think critically about issues and situations, and to demonstrate understanding of their complexity when forming arguments and developing rebuttals;</li> <li>Locate appropriate sources of information and assess the relevancy of information researched in supporting arguments;</li> <li>Be active listeners to the perspectives of teammates and opposition debaters, and to use these to evaluate their own points of view;</li> <li>Express themselves with purpose, clarity, empathy and sensitivity; and</li> <li>Reflect on individual and team strengths and weaknesses to improve future performance in debates.</li> </ul> <p>This is a casual position for the 2025 school year, working on Friday afternoons and evenings. Coaches generally work total of approximately 4 to 5 hours per week during Terms 1-3, with optional work available in Term 4. There may also be an opportunity to coach social debating on Thursday afternoons. Remuneration is competitive and based on experience.</p> <p><strong>ABOUT YOU</strong></p> <p>You have experience in competition debating and experience or aptitude to coach secondary school debaters in the intermediate and senior year stages.&nbsp;Recent school graduates with a record of outstanding achievement in competition debating are also welcome to apply.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>SELECTION CRITERIA</strong></p> <ul> <li>Experience coaching secondary school debaters</li> <li>Experienced in the use of online platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom</li> <li>Capability to encourage student passion and excellence through coaching methods</li> <li>Adaptable coaching practice, catering to the specific needs of students</li> <li>Knowledgeable across a broad range of topic areas, and prepared to grow their own knowledge to develop and deliver high-quality coaching resources to support the needs of debaters</li> <li>Able to collaborate within a collegial team environment, working with other coaches to deliver a rigorous and enjoyable programme for debaters</li> <li>A level of mobility that supports the ability to respond to a first aid / behavioural incident</li> <li>A firm commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children&nbsp;</li> <li>A demonstrated understanding of child safety and appropriate behaviours when engaging with children.&nbsp;</li> </ul> <p>Experience adjudicating competition debating at the senior school level, and debating at university level, would be an advantage.&nbsp;</p> <p>Recent school graduates applying should be motivated to learn from and apply advice from experienced coaches and teachers working with the programme.&nbsp;</p> <p>All applicants must be prepared to complete a first aid course, which will be organised by the school.</p> <p><strong>HOW TO APPLY</strong></p> <p>Applications should include a resume and a cover letter addressing the selection criteria and reasons for your interest in the position.
